Nils Nielsen’s Nadeshiko Japan secured automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil with a superb 7-0 victory over Philippines in the Asian Cup quarter-finals in Sydney.
The win sets up a semi-final clash with South Korea on Wednesday.
The result continues a strong campaign for the squad, who remain undefeated after four matches. Japan topped their Group C with three dominant performances, and are yet to concede a goal in the competition.
At this year’s tournament, Japan is led by a foreign coaching staff for the first time in their history, with the pairing of Danish Head Coach Nils Nielsen and Australian Assistant Coach Leah Blayney bringing significant major tournament experience.
Reflecting on the ambitions for the rest of the tournament, the Head Coach commented:
"We are happy to have qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup, but we are approaching this AFC Women's Asian Cup with respect, so we want to focus on fighting to win the championship. In our next match against South Korea, we want to focus on giving our best performance rather than being overly conscious of our opponent."
Wishing the team the best of success for the week ahead!
