Rachel Furness and TNT’s Liam MacDevitt interview Newcastle United midfielder Lois Jo

Congratulations to Rachel Furness on making her TNT Sports punditry debut across two Women’s FA Cup ties this weekend.

Furness, recently retired from a 20-year playing career, joined TNT’s broadcast team for the Northeast doubleheader of Newcastle United vs. West Ham United and Sunderland vs. London City Lionesses.  

Reflecting on her own experiences from her time on the pitch, the former midfielder was able to take viewers into the moment and explain how the players were feeling.  Rachel also brought the inside track into the mind of Tanya Oxtoby, her coach at Northern Ireland for the latter stages of her international career.

With her main role as Newcastle United’s U16 Girls Head coach, Rachel has nevertheless been increasing her television experience in the past years, firstly hosting a clubwide talkshow while at Liverpool Women, before supporting with commentary duties on broadcasts for both Northern Ireland and Newcastle United. 

On a personal level, the matches carried added significance, with Rachel having established herself in trophy-winning seasons for Sunderland, as well as featuring for hometown club Newcastle United at both the start and end of her career.
